What AI share of voice means
In classic marketing, share of voice is your share of the conversation in a market. In AI search, that conversation happens in the answers assistants give to buyer questions. AI share of voice asks a simple question: of all the times an answer named a brand in your set, how often was it yours?
SearchSeal counts each brand’s mentions in saved answers. Your share of voice is your mention count divided by the total mention count for your brand and every rival you track. The shares of all tracked brands add up to 100%.
Visibility is a different number. It divides the answers that name your brand by all saved answers, whether or not they name anyone. One answer can name several brands, so visibility figures do not add up to 100%, while share of voice does.
A worked example
Take 150 saved answers to the same questions, with three tracked brands. The figures are fictional and only show how the two numbers differ. Each answer here names a brand once, so its mention count equals the number of answers that name it.
| Brand | Answers naming it | Visibility | Share of voice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your brand | 60 | 40% | 30% |
| Rival A | 90 | 60% | 45% |
| Rival B | 50 | 33.3% | 25% |
Your brand appears in 40% of answers, yet holds 30% of the voice, because Rival A is named far more often in the same answers. Adding or removing a tracked rival changes every share, so keep the rival set stable when you compare periods.
How SearchSeal measures it
SearchSeal asks your saved questions every day and reads each answer for your brand and your tracked rivals. Each brand can track up to 25 rivals on every plan, and names are matched in the answer text, so extra rivals use no extra questions.
The brand report returns share of voice, visibility, average position and tone for your brand and each rival. Split it by AI engine or country to see where a rival leads. The report is available through the REST API and the MCP server on every plan. In the app, the rivals page compares your share of answers with each rival, per AI tool, with the change against the previous period.
Every figure links back to saved answers. Open the answers where a rival is named and you are not, read the wording and the source links, then decide which page to improve.
Plans that include share of voice
Share of voice is part of every plan. The plans differ in how many questions you track and which AI engines answer them.
| Plan | Price a month | Questions | AI engines |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $79 | 60 | AI Overview, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity |
| Pro | $179 | 150 | AI Overview, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity |
| Max | $399 | 400 | AI Overview, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity |
What share of voice cannot tell you
Share of voice comes from samples. Answers vary by run, location and account, so a small sample can move a lot from one week to the next. Read the number with its date range and answer count.
It only covers the brands you track. A rival you have not added still appears in real answers but is not counted in the total. It is not your share of sales in the market, and a change after a page fix does not prove the fix caused it.
Common questions
Is AI share of voice the same as AI visibility?
No. Visibility is the share of all answers that name your brand. Share of voice is your share of the brand mentions among the brands you track.
Can I track share of voice per AI engine?
Yes. You can view the brand report by AI engine to see your share in each assistant your plan covers.
Do I need to know my rivals first?
No. Start with the free site check, which suggests possible competitors based on your site. Once answers arrive, SearchSeal lists brands that keep appearing so you can add them.
