How do you compare your brand with a rival in AI answers?

Pick one rival and ten questions you want AI tools to answer. Ask each tool the same questions, record whether each answer names your brand or the rival, and count how often each appears. In SearchSeal, use Rivals to compare Share of answers per AI tool, then open saved answers to decide what to fix.

Compare mentions in five steps

  1. Choose your rival and questions. Pick one rival and ten buyer questions relevant to your category, a use case or a comparison. Keep that set together so you can compare both brands across the same questions.
  2. Ask each AI tool. Run every question through each AI tool you want to compare. Keep the question wording the same and record the date with each answer.
  3. Record who gets named. For each question and tool, note whether the answer names your brand, your rival, both or neither. Keep the answer text and source links so you can read the evidence behind your notes.
  4. Count each brand's appearances. Count how often each brand appears in the answers from each tool. Separately flag questions where the rival appears and your brand does not.
  5. Read the evidence and choose. Open those answers and read what they say about the rival alongside the source links that came back. In SearchSeal, review Actions and choose a fix based on its question, evidence and page URL.

Work through a scheduling brand example

Northwind Scheduling and ShiftBoard Example are made-up brands. Suppose you want to see where an answer names ShiftBoard Example while leaving out Northwind Scheduling. Open Rivals and read the You vs rivals table, which shows Share of answers per AI tool.

Next, open Questions rivals win. This list identifies questions where a rival is named and your brand is absent. Open a question to read its saved answers. Read the full text to understand how ShiftBoard Example appears, then inspect the source links that came back with the answer. A returned link alone does not prove the answer used or cited that page.

Go to Actions and review a relevant fix. Read what to change and its evidence, then check the page URL and the question it came from before deciding whether to use the draft.

Know what the comparison can tell you

Share of answers describes appearances within the sample of saved answers. It is not a ranking. SearchSeal records a position for your brand and each rival only when the answer contains a numbered or ranked list; other answers have no position.

Rivals are found by name matching in saved answers. Read the underlying answer when you need to understand a mention. Answers vary between runs, so compare how often each brand appears over time before deciding what needs attention.

Google AI Overviews also depends on whether Google shows an overview for that search on that day. If none appears, SearchSeal saves nothing for that search. That is a result, and it leaves no saved answer to include in the comparison.

A change after a page fix does not prove the fix caused it. SearchSeal's before and after card states that other changes can affect the numbers.

Use SearchSeal to repeat the comparison

Our rival tracking page explains the comparison available in SearchSeal. During setup, add your site, then choose questions and rivals. SearchSeal checks your selected questions daily and saves the answers with their dates.

In Rivals, use Manage rivals to review Tracked and Suggested from answers, or select Add a rival. Every plan supports up to 25 rivals per brand. The You vs rivals table separates Share of answers by AI tool, while Questions rivals win helps you find answers to inspect.

For a free starting point, the site check accepts a domain without an account and returns the brand, its category and up to four suggested rivals from public information. It does not measure AI answers or give a score. Use it to help choose a rival before you start the comparison.

After you read the saved answers, review the ranked fixes in Actions. Each fix includes evidence and a page URL, so you can assess the proposed change against the answer that prompted it.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a question a rival wins?

In SearchSeal, it is a question where a saved answer names a rival and does not name your brand. Open the question to read the answer and understand the mention.

Can I compare more than one rival?

Yes. Every plan supports up to 25 rivals per brand. Start with one rival and ten questions for the manual comparison, then manage your tracked rivals in SearchSeal.

Does a source link prove why a rival appeared?

No. A source link does not prove the answer used or cited that page. Read the full saved answer alongside its returned links.
