How do you check whether an AI Overview names your brand?

Search a buyer question in Google using your customers’ country and language. If an AI Overview appears, read the answer for your brand and open its source links. Record the question, date, whether an overview appeared, whether your brand was named and the sources. Repeat on another day because answers change.

Five steps to check your brand

  1. Choose a buyer question. Pick a question a customer would ask when looking for a product or service in your category. Write down the exact wording so you can use it again.
  2. Search in your customers’ market. Run the question in Google in the country and language your customers use. Check whether Google shows an AI Overview for that search.
  3. Read the overview and open sources. When an overview appears, read its text for your brand and any rivals it names. Open its source links and record them separately from the brand mentions.
  4. Record what appeared. Save the question, date, whether an overview appeared, whether your brand was named and the source links. If Google shows no overview, record that result.
  5. Repeat on another day. Search the same question again in the same country and language. Compare the dated records to see whether the overview, brand mentions or sources changed.

A manual check for a restaurant software question

Suppose you want to check the made-up question “best shift scheduling software for a small restaurant”. Enter that exact question in Google using the country and language of the customers you want to reach. Look for an AI Overview before you record anything about your brand.

If one appears, read the full answer and check whether it names your brand. Record any rivals it names, then open the source links and save their addresses. Keep the brand mention and source records separate: your check needs to show both what the answer said and which links appeared with it.

For this example, create a record with the question, the date of your search, whether an overview was shown, whether your brand was named and the source URLs. If there is no overview, record “not shown” and leave the brand and source fields empty. Repeat the question on another day and keep that date’s record alongside the first.

What a single check can tell you

An AI Overview does not appear for every Google search. A search without one is a result worth recording; it gives you no overview text to assess for that question on that day. Keep that distinct from an overview that appears and leaves your brand out.

Answers vary between runs. One dated check records an observation, while repeated checks let you compare how often your brand appears over time. A change after you edit a page does not prove the edit caused it. A source link also does not prove the answer used or cited that page.

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to qualify as a supporting source in its AI features. See Google’s source eligibility requirements and our guidance on how to rank in Google AI Overviews.

Track the same questions with SearchSeal

Our AI search visibility tracking runs one Google search per tracked question, in that question’s country and language, every day on every paid plan. When Google shows an overview, SearchSeal saves its full text and the source links that came back. You can open a question’s saved answers from Questions and compare dated answers.

When Google shows no overview that day, nothing is saved for that search. That absence is a result, and the check has not failed. SearchSeal reports how often your brand appears over time and records a position only when the answer contains a numbered or ranked list.

To start, add your site and choose questions and rivals. You can also use our free site check without an account to identify your brand, category and up to four suggested rivals. It does not measure AI answers or give a score. See pricing for the plans.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google show an AI Overview for every question?

No. Google can show no overview for a search on a given day. In a manual check, record that it was not shown; in SearchSeal, no answer is saved for that search.

Are Google AI Mode and Gemini the same check?

Google AI Mode and Gemini are separate from AI Overviews. SearchSeal includes Gemini on every paid plan; Google AI Mode is an add-on.

Does a source link mean my brand was recommended?

A source link does not prove the answer used or cited that page. Read the overview text to check whether your brand was named, and record the links separately.
