Common questions

How long should a title be?

Google uses width to decide where to cut titles. On desktop, the limit is about 600 pixels, usually 50 to 60 characters. Put the important words first.

How long should a meta description be?

Up to about 920 pixels on desktop, usually 150 to 160 characters. Phones show less, so make the first sentence work on its own.

Why does Google show a different title or description?

Google rewrites titles and descriptions when it thinks another line on the page matches the search better. Clear, accurate text that matches the page is rewritten less often.

Why measure in pixels instead of characters?

Letters have different widths. A title full of W and M runs out of room much sooner than one full of i and l, so a character count can say a title fits when it does not.
