How to Know if ChatGPT Cites Your Website

Use a defined prompt sample to check ChatGPT citations without confusing citations, mentions, referrals, and crawls.
There is no complete citation counter
ChatGPT doesn't publish a Search Console report listing every answer that cited a domain. Any citation total comes from a sample chosen by the person or tool running the test.
Defining the sample is what makes the number usable.
A useful result sounds like this:
SearchSeal appeared as a linked source in 8 of 50 tracked prompts on ChatGPT Search in the United States on 4 August 2026.
“Your website has eight AI citations” drops the denominator, surface, location, and date. We don't publish a number like that because it is less accurate than the messier version above.
Define the test before counting
Write down:
- the exact prompts
- the ChatGPT product or search surface
- the country and language
- the test date
- the number of repeated runs
- what counts as a citation
Use prompts that match real customer decisions. Keep a stable baseline so one test can be compared with the next.
Separate citations from mentions
A citation is a visible source link to your domain or page. A mention is your brand name in the answer without a source link.
Track both, but don't merge them. A brand can be recommended without a citation. A page can appear in the source list without the brand being recommended.
For each run, store the answer, source URLs, visible brand names, time, and query settings. Screenshots help with review, but structured records are easier to compare.
Crawler visits and referrals do not fill the gap
An OAI-SearchBot line in an access log records a crawler reaching the page. A later ChatGPT answer needs its own capture before you can call it a citation.
The same boundary applies to referrals. A chatgpt.com visit records a click, while answers that produced no click remain invisible to website analytics.
SearchSeal measures human website activity and separate crawler evidence. It does not poll ChatGPT or invent a citation score. Use an answer-monitoring tool or a documented manual sample for the citation layer.
A small honest sample beats a large mystery score
Start with the buyer questions that matter most. A short, stable set of prompts can reveal:
- which pages get cited
- which competitors replace you
- whether the brand is mentioned without a link
- whether results change after a content update
A single citation score would be easier to sell and harder to trust. The prompts, surface, and date are what make a change in the number mean anything.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see every ChatGPT citation to my website?
No universal report exposes every citation. Citation tools measure a selected set of prompts and answer runs.
Is a brand mention the same as a citation?
A citation includes a visible source link. A mention names the brand without necessarily linking to it.
Does SearchSeal count AI citations?
SearchSeal does not count citations. It measures website analytics and separate crawler request evidence without polling chatbots.
