What is llms.txt?

An llms.txt file is a short Markdown guide to a website. It gives an AI agent context and a selected set of links to explore. Think of it as an introduction and reading list: enough information to choose the right page, with the detail kept at the linked destination.

The llmstxt.org proposal starts with an H1 site name, followed by a blockquote summary, optional details and H2 sections of links. Each link can have a short note. The site name is the only required part of the format; a summary helps explain the rest.

What it does not do

llms.txt is not a Google ranking factor. Google says it ignores these files for Search, including its generative AI features, so publishing one neither helps nor harms those rankings. It also does not replace robots.txt access rules or your XML sitemap.

Adoption by AI crawlers and agents varies. The proposal's v2 notes describe use by coding agents, while Google documents a different policy. Do not assume universal support. A file cannot guarantee that an assistant reads, recommends or cites your site. This generator formats your input locally; it makes no network requests, calls no AI and cannot check whether the linked pages exist.

Build a useful reading list

Start with a recognizable site name and one sentence explaining what visitors can find. Paste the contents of a sitemap.xml file or a list of full URLs. Use the import button to create the groups, then review the titles derived from your URL paths. Replace vague titles with wording that describes the actual page.

Add notes that help a reader choose between similar resources. A setup guide might explain the first steps; a reference page might list supported settings. Put the most useful links first within each section. Remove outdated pages and move secondary reading into Optional. The preview updates as you edit.

Publish at /llms.txt

Download the file and add it to your website so it is available at https://your-domain.com/llms.txt. For a static site, this usually means placing it in the public directory before your next deployment. Open that address after publishing and confirm you see the file text rather than a login screen or an HTML error page.

Open SearchSeal's own llms.txt for a live example. Our guide to llms.txt and Markdown surfaces explains how the index fits alongside readable page content.

Keep the file current

Review the file whenever you change navigation, retire a product or publish an important guide. Follow each link and update notes that describe old behavior. Use current destination URLs when a page moves. Keep the file alongside your site content so updates go through the same review process.

Ask a colleague to use the reading list to find a specific answer. If they choose the wrong page, make its title or note more precise.

Frequently asked questions

Is this llms txt file generator free?

Yes. You can edit, copy and download a file without an account. The prefilled example is fictional; replace it with your own site details before publishing.

Should I include every page?

Choose pages that explain your site and answer useful questions. A short, deliberate reading list is easier to review than a copy of every archive and category page.

What belongs in Optional?

Use it for secondary references or background reading. In the current specification, Optional is a naming convention, not an instruction that software must enforce.

Can I edit the download later?

Yes. Open llms.txt in any plain text editor, make your changes and upload the revised file. Keep its Markdown headings and link syntax intact.
